What sort of substrate do you have?
Do you have adequate lighting?
Co2?
Liquid plant diet?
If the tank was not set up with plants in mind it's best to find plants that will work with what you have. Crypts are very hardy. Some Petsmart locations carry them.
first on, when you buy aquatic plants that are dry (like in petco and petsmart) you shouldn't expect them to he super healthy.
i always buy my plants from local fish stores rather than brand-name stores. try yahoo local and search for <fish>. it will give you a nice list of local fishstores who most probably have a plant tank too. always cheak for the top most tip of the plant for greenery.
you might want to consider the amount of light available! don't worry about other stuff…while it matters…it's not so drastic….
email me for any questions and best of luck! References :

I've had better luck than you've had with plants from Petco, but I've seen some I chose not to buy because they looked brown and unhealthy. The healthiest loooking plant in my tank is a cutting from an ordinary philodendron (like the one at the link below) that I put in a bottle of water and allowed to grow roots before I put it in the tank. It's not sold as an aquatic plant but I decided to try it after reading that other people had had some success with them. It's been in there for about a month and it seems to be thriving.
